Research and Planning

In research and planning there will be, research into conventions of a music video, CD cover and a magazine advert. Research into different audiences and genres and planning to my final products.

RESEARCH INTO CONVENTIONS OF A MUSIC VIDEO

I learnt about Goodwins theory of music videos and then applied his theory to write an essay about a band I liked and one of their music videos. I chose Adele- Rolling in the deep. I wrote up and essay and then I decided to record myself speaking the essay with the video playing in the background. I believed that this was a more creative way of presenting my work.

Goodwin has 6 conventions of a music magazine, I researched each convention and researched music videos to match the convention. Below are the conventions and video match.

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. This could include dance routines for a boy band or girl band. You would expect a typical band to have a dance routine in their video especially if it it pop genre. An example of where this is scene is JLS (everybody in love) the boys in this band have a repetitive dance routine throughout. Below is the video for JLS:

2. The second Goodwin convention is that there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. This means that the words that the artist is singing matches the images seen on the screen. An example of this is Beyonce (If I were a boy). The song is singing about if the artist was a boy and swapped roles with her husband. The visuals are of Beyonce swapping roles with her husband and seeing his point of view of things. Below is the video for Beyonce:

3. The third convention is there is a relationship between the music and visuals. The rhythm or the instrumentation creates the image on the music video. I researched into finding an example of this and found Coldplay (yellow). I chose Coldplay, this is because his footage doesn't tell a story. He is walking along a beach. The sky is gloomy and he looks sad and dressed dull, this gives the impression of a sad and mourning song. The pace of the music isn't fast, it gives the impression of a sad and gloomy song as well. I believed this video matched this convention. Below is the video for Coldplay:

4. The fourth convention from Goodwin is that the record label will demand a lot of close ups of the artist, this advertises the artist and helps the music video to sell. I researched Christina Perri I looked at her songs (Arms), (Jar of hearts) and (A thousand years) I found that in all three videos there were many photos. I screen shot the particular close ups, they are viewed below:

5. The fifth convention is the voyeuristic treatment of the female body, female artists are seen as a sex symbols and may perform a dance or routine for a man or for us the audience. For this example I chose Niki Minaj (superbass) in this music video I screen shot ted three particular scenes where this happened. Two involved her dancing for a man and one involved her walking and all the men looking at her, I believed this represented voyeurism. Below is the 3 images.

6.  The final convention that Goodwin states is that their is often an intertextual reference. This means a TV programme or film may seem familiar and come to mind when watching the music video. It could be a spoof of a programme. The particular music video I researched into was Beastie Boys (sabotage). It is a homage and parody of the 1970 crime drama television series. The characters are dressed as detectives and take upon the role of detectives in a funny way. Below is the video:

PRELIMINARY TASK

My preliminary task was to create a mock music video, I had a few weeks and little resources to create a music video to a song of my choice. I chose James Morrison- Wonderful world, below is my video. This allowed me to play around with the IT programmes and get used to them and and make sure I understand all the effects that are provided to me. It also helped me learn from my mistakes doing a prelim, this was because this time round I will be better at time management and have fully detailed planning and schedules to stick to. This means I won't get lost off or miss any piece of work out. Also I learned that it is much better to have too much footage than not enough.

AUDIENCE PROFILE

Our audience profile has lots of images in a collage. This is done in the style of a mood board. The images relate to the genre of the band and audience. The people that would listen to the music and what their interests would be. What food they like, clothes and activities they like getting up to.

I believe that the most important views of audience profile is the actual audience therefore at one of their gigs I handed out questionnaires to the audience with questions in about their hobbies and interests to help with my audience profile. I then collected these results and made charts on them, below are charts of my findings:

VIDEO PITCH

We made a video pitch for our music video, it included our ideas and thoughts on what we are going to do. This helps us plan out and allow enough time to get everything done. We may change our ideas compared to this video pitch as it is just a starting point. Below is a link to our video pitch....

RESEARCH INTO DIGI PACKS

I have analysed two digi packs and made notes on conventions of digi packs and links between front cover, inside panes and back cover. The first digi pack I analysed was Hard-fi (Stars of CCTV) below is a links to the 3 parts of the digi pack: below is a links to the 3 parts of the digi pack: below is a links to the 3 parts of the digi pack:

Another Digi pack I analysed was Bruno Mars album Doo-wops and Hooligans below is the links to the 3 parts of the digi pack:

RESEARCH INTO MAGAZINE ADVERTS

We have to make a magazine advert for our music video, therefore I analysed magazine adverts to help me with the conventions of them, below is a link to my analysis;I used my analysis to help create ideas to come up with a final idea for our magazine advert and have the correct conventions.

Magazine advert 1- Kings of Leon

Magazine advert 2- Gwen staffani
Magazine advert 3- Ellie Goulding
STORYBOARD FLOW CHART

We  made a storyboard, then used our flow chart to make our animatic. The flow chart allowed us to talk about each scene and have the accurate timings of each scene. Below is an image of our flow chart. This will help us when making our media video as we can have it in chronological order and when putting the video together have the correct timings wrote down.

STORYBOARD AND ANIMATIC

We made a story board and then drew the images on individual sticky notes. This meant we could use these individually and film the storyboard whilst talking about it. Below is our full storyboard and a our animatic. This is a different way to present our work which we believe was an effective way. This helps us to know what we are doing when filming.

SCHEDULE

We made a schedule of events, this allowed us to plan our time accurately and meant we knew what we were doing and when. It included dates of either photo shoots, filming or dead lines. Using a schedule means we don't get lost or mixed up and can allocate roles more easier. We may not stick to our schedule but it is a basic guideline. Below is an image of our schedule.

SHOT  PLANS

When filming we will have many scenes to take footage of. Most the scenes are repeated throughout so we have made a shot plan which allows us to do each section of filming when in a certain area. This means we are using our time effectively and have everything planned out so we know what we are doing. Below is
an image of our shot plans:

BRAND IDENTITY

We are keeping a few things the same throughout our three products. The image of 'The Notice' is on our digi pack on the bottom right, it is on the magazine advert in the middle an appears on the set of drums in the video. This links all three elements. This is important because 'The Notice' are an insigned band, therefore they need a USP that people will soon recognise. This logo will be on all their products and be in black and white form to stick to the colour theme through out my products.  Also, we have a ghostly Gothic theme kept throughout. This highlights the surreal element of our productions and links with the style of music as we spoke to the band about the lyrics behind this song and they enforced there was a ghoslty vibe about it. The image below is the recognisble logo that will be used throughout. There is also a image screen grabbed from a ghostly scene in our video.

PLANS OF DIGI PACK

Our digi pack colour palett and ideas run throughout all three elements, we have a black and white image of a girl, and this is seen as haunted as is our video footage. We decided to keep the same logo of the bands name as well in that font. We talked to the band of the song we are using and asked about the song. One member explained how it is a ghostly song and that was the story that comes across. We used this knowledge to design our digi pack. We were going to take a photo of a girl and drew it for a plan, we liked the drawing and thought it gave a lot of effect so decided to use that instead. Below is a picture of our design, however later on in the process we came up with another drawing and we are planning on usign this. We kept the basic style of the image in the new image.

Above is our final image we used for our digi pack. We chose this one after talking to the band memebers to see what they preferred and our audience. This one was the chosen image, however it is similar to the other image as it is drawn. That is the effect we were going for. However it isn't as scary as the last one, but she has her face covered therefore it is more mysterious.

PLANS FOR MAGAZINE ADVERT

We have to make a magazine advert which advertises our music video, I have researched into conventions of a magazine advert and they are above. We have kept the logo The Notice  above throughout and it appears on our magazine as well. Below is an image of our writing on our magazine advert, then a picture of a forest that will be in the background then we will have a model that looks like the image above standing against a tree. It will look spooky and will be in black and white.

Wires
All Models when having photos taken or filming.
Bright tape to indicate where wires are.
Cello tape the wires to the floor.
Visit the site and make sure all wires are clearly labelled and cello taped.
Weather
The equipment
Check weather forecast.
Make sure the weather conditions are correct and not too wet so it damages equipment.
Waterproof equipment if needs be.
Wet surfaces
People involved in the filming and acting.

Safety checks the area we will be filming first and brief everyone involved.

Make sure everyone involved is aware of any slippy surfaces that could potentially cause an accident.

One person needs to safety check the area before any filming starts.

Allocation of roles

I am working as a pair for this coursework, this therefore means that we have more ideas coming to our work and we can work together to make an outstanding portfolio. To make sure the work effort is fair we have divided the work equally between us but put our ideas together for every piece. Rebecca is the more artistic student, therefore she did the drawing for the digi pack and magazine advert, however we worked together to come up with the ideas and I designed the rest of the panels in the digi pack. Rebecca made a video pitch which represnted our ideas for our work. She did the shot plans whilst I did the shot list and schedule for our planning to help us layout our work. I will have more of the editing to do when it comes to filming as we have decided this between us. Solely I analysed into my own conventions of a music magazine, did my own prelim experiment, made my own audience profile for our music video. I did research on digi packs and magazine adverts and their conventions. We jointly did the brand identity section which is seen through all our 3 productions. The risk assessment we have is also the same and done together.
