Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products?

Below I have screen shotted various parts of my three products and then done a write up of how they are similar or different to real media products.
Magazine advert
I analysed many magazine adverts before we created our own for our music video, we looked at kings of Leon, come around sundown. I realised that Kings of Leon was the same genre; therefore I researched into them to give myself ideas of typical conventions. Our magazine advert was similar to Kings of Leon because it had the name of the band across the top. However almost every magazine advert I looked at had the name of the band in the biggest and boldest writing as well. This is to draw the audience straight away.

We included the debut albums name ‘Sweet Nothing’ this is a generic aspect that other magazine adverts follow. Many adverts have the albums name and the date it is released. These are very important that they are displayed as every music advert we looked at had these on. Without these the audience would not be interested. We included NME logo on ours; this is because our genre and target audience would read NME therefore linking this to the magazine allows us to develop the realism of our media product. Kings of Leon used HMV which is another music firm.
Many adverts include a rating on their advert, for example on these two adverts there are stars. These show how much people have rated this album. This influences the audience to look into this. Also we followed the convention of including a comment off someone; this could be of a social networking site or a blog. We include “one word, outstanding” this is short but simple.
Digi Pack
I researched into digi packs and different styles and came across one of the Beatles albums. It was a hand drawn image on the digi pack. I thought that this worked really well even though it challenged usual conventions. When making the digi pack I decided to challenge the forms and have hand drawn images. We kept this throughout and had a hand drawn front image with the girl covering her face, a hand drawn tree as the back page and a girl on the inside panel looking into the distance. Rebecca also studies art and is a really good drawer, therefore we discussed what image we wanted and she drew and came up with one.

My back cover has lots of typical conventions that every digi pack has, these include track names and numbers, this is important so that the consumer know what they are buying. This makes our product more realistic to a digi pack. I also included a bar code and record label, every digi pack I researched had these on as they are what you expect to see on a digi pack. We stuck to the black and white theme and the hand drawn image as this links in well with our other panels. On our back cover we had a website that the band can be seen on and their others songs can be viewed. Not many digi packs we looked at had this convention on therefore it contrasts the typical conventions.

Music Video
I decided to do my analysis of my music video differently and made a prezi showing the conventions.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I sat and went through our music video and picked out certain areas where I believe that I have linked all three products together. I then recorded my self talking about each area and put a few screen shots of these up along with me speaking. Below is my presentation:

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Rough Cut

I made a rough cut for media, I uploaded all the footage we had taken and from this created a music video using ideas off our video pitch to help me, I made the footage the colours we wanted and added it to the pace of music. We hadn't uploaded the footage of the band playing when I made the music video so I left blank spaces to add this to. Social networking is a vital part of marketing at the moment, especially for small bands that need to get out there. Therefore this made us decide to upload it onto Facebook, which is a commonly used social networking site. I uploaded it onto my page and tagged other media pupils in my sixth form as I felt I would get good constructive criticism comments from them as they know what they are talking about and what is expected. I also tagged the band members in the video footage so they could have a look at where we were at and make their judgement. We know the band so we got to talk to the members and find out what their ideas were when writing this song so we could incorporate this in our video. On Facebook it was public so open to anybody’s feedback. Below is two screen shots of the comments:

Music Video

When in sixth form I showed other media students, teachers, pupils and family our media video to get their feedback on it, I took photos of the pupils and copied up their comment matched with their photos. Below is our feedback and then a short video of what we learnt from their critical comments.

“When I watched the rough cut of this video, it was obvious in a number of places that the editing wasn’t matched specifically to the music; therefore the footage that I watched wasn’t as effective as it could have been. However, when I saw the finished video it was clear that this was something they had changed because the storyline matched the beats in the music. Also, on the rough cut they hadn’t filmed the footage for the band section; therefore it was hard to actually tell what it would be like. I think that this footage works well, in particular because of the lip syncing as it reflects a true music video. I think that the lighting works well in this part because it highlights the main part of the video. I think there is a good range of shots in the storyline part of the video and this works well because it contributes to the drama that is taking place, the mystery that it creates and it enhances the beats in the music. Altogether, as I already knew some of the music by The Notice and their style, I think this video works really well. I think the contrast between the storyline and the band footage works to an advantage and it makes the video more interesting. It fits exactly to their style and I think overall it works well with the music; both storyline and band footage.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed watching this music video, I got the impression that a lot of hard work has gone into it and time from both partners. I thought the lip syncing was excellent and since I know the band I think the theme of the video goes really well with the genre. To improve your work I think you could add more of a variety of camera angles, you have a lot in however a few more with quicker cuts would have gone lovely especially where the pace of the music picks up tempo.”

“I do not know this band and It also isn’t my style of genre as I am younger, however I enjoyed watching it and think that the music and video worked very well together. I loved the footage of the scary girl; it went well with the spookiness of the music. I love music and watch many music videos, I think that Hannah and Rebecca followed a lot of common conventions and managed to create a great video, the only criticism I have is that they could have had a contrasting convention to add to the mysteriousness.”

“I think that the soundtrack the girls have used goes really well with the visuals in the video. I loved the dark mysterious theme to it. I think that they could add some transitions to the different clips however, as they were sharp. If they are going for the sharp look then this works really well. You can clearly see the drama building up throughout the video and I think it is a real twist when they leave the video with a Cliff hanger. It left me on edge and I wanted to find out more. This drama is emulated by the song and I think that is one of the reasons why this music video works so well. I liked how the effects added to the video different to what you would normally see on other music videos but I think this worked well with the contrast between the band and the storyline.
“Hannah and Rebecca’s music video was really good to watch, it looked professional. There were a few tweaks that could be made to the editing; however the clips and pace of music go really well. I think this was the best part to the video as you could tell it had time and effort put in to get it accurate. The lightening could be adjusted a little on the band footage.”
